Project Overview

Like most banks, American Express requires their users to complete a KYC. The requirements vary widely depending on each market’s laws. With tight deadlines, this project needed efficiency and consistency.

Recognizing the Gaps and Building a Scalable Design System

What started as a standard design request quickly revealed a larger challenge. How could we create a seamless experience across large medium and small screens while ensuring efficiency for future iterations? I realized that a traditional approach would not be enough.

We needed a scalable system that could adapt not just to different screen sizes but also to different markets. Each region would have unique needs and expectations which meant certain experiences would require customization to fit cultural and functional differences.

Crafting a Smarter Figma Library

Instead of designing screens individually, I took a step back to assess patterns, redundancies, and gaps in our KYC workflow.

I built a Figma library with reusable components, responsive variants, and flexible content and layout structures.

This approach allowed the team to work more efficiently while maintaining consistency across breakpoints.

Future-Proofing for Global Scale

By structuring the library with flexibility in mind, I ensured that our designs could easily scale to new markets.

With built-in localization considerations, such as variable text lengths and right-to-left support, my design system became a foundation for long-term global expansion to over 20 markets and has been worked on by more than 4 different designers.
